What Hard Bounce Magic Actually Is

This one has strict criteria. It only works if your business has: a customer list of 1,000+, sold over $250k, and sent over 1 million emails. If that's you, the video above is worth your seven minutes. What Jonathan has found in every single qualifying list he's ever analyzed is a recoverable pool of revenue hiding in hard bounces.

In one implementation, this process uncovered $1,383,751.96 in customer value. That number is not a typo.

Most businesses treat hard bounces as a dead end. They are not. There is a specific process for recovering, re-engaging, and monetizing contacts that your email platform has written off and it has produced over $15,000 in revenue on the first implementation for every client who qualified.

The video above shows exactly what to look for in your hard bounce data and the step-by-step process to recover and monetize those contacts.

This training is for you if:

  • Customer list of 1,000+ contacts
  • Sold over $250,000 in revenue
  • Sent over 1 million emails

How To Find Your Hard Bounces in Your Platform

Before you can recover anything, you have to pull the list. Here is exactly where your hard bounces live, and how to export them, inside the four platforms most of our clients run on. The screens move occasionally, but the path is the same: isolate the hard bounces, then get them out as a CSV.

Klaviyo Segment + CSV
  1. In the left nav, open Audience › Lists & segments, then click Create new › Segment.
  2. Set the condition to What someone has done (or not done)Bounced Email, at least once over all time.
  3. Add a filter on the property Bounce Type equals Hard Bounce so soft bounces stay out.
  4. Name and create the segment. It populates instantly with every hard-bounced profile.

Export: open the segment and choose Manage › Export segment to CSV. To eyeball the raw list, Profiles › View suppressed profiles shows everything Klaviyo has suppressed.

ActiveCampaign Bounce report + export
  1. Open the campaign you want to inspect and go to its Reports.
  2. In the Summary box, click Bounces. The Bounce Report lists every bounced contact with the date, bounce code, type, and description.
  3. For an account-wide view, go to Contacts and filter by list Status › Bounced.
  4. A hard bounce flips a contact to "Bounced" immediately and stops all further sends to that address.

Export: from the filtered Contacts view, select all and click Export for a CSV. Add the same contacts to your Exclusion List to keep them out of future sends.

Kit Formerly ConvertKit
  1. In the top nav, open Grow › Subscribers.
  2. Click the All subscribers dropdown and switch it to Bounced. Kit flags only hard bounces here, and those subscribers are auto-unsubscribed.
  3. For repeat access, save the view as a Segment from the right sidebar.

Export: select all, then use the bulk action Export. Kit emails a download link to your account address.

Keap / Infusionsoft Two flavors

Max Classic (Infusionsoft)

  1. Go to Marketing › Reports › Email Status Search.
  2. Set Email Status to Hard Bounce and run the search.
  3. Select the results to tag or export them. Hard-bounced addresses are auto-disabled for sending.

Keap Pro & Max

  1. Open the Email engagement report, or go to Contacts and search by email marketability status.
  2. Hard bounces show as non-marketable. Select the matching contacts to export or tag them.

Export: from either search result, select all and use Actions › Export to download a CSV.

Once you have that CSV in hand, the video above walks you through the rest: how to validate, re-engage, and monetize the contacts your platform wrote off.
